Panorama Mesdag is one of the most unusual museums in Europe. It holds a single, enormous circular painting: a view of the sea, the dunes and the fishing village of Scheveningen as they looked in 1881, about 120 metres in circumference and around 14 metres high.
It was painted in a few months by the marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag, helped by his wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, George Hendrik Breitner and other artists. Panoramas were a popular attraction in the 19th century; this one is a rare survivor still in the building made for it.
You reach it through a dark passage and up a spiral staircase, emerging on a viewing platform built as a dune, with real sand and objects in the foreground melting into the painted scene. The effect of light, sky and space is genuinely startling.
