Where to Stay in The Hague

Grand hotels on Lange Voorhout, beach hotels at Scheveningen and good-value bases by the stations — the best areas compared, with hand-picked places in every budget.

The Hague has a good range of places to stay for a city of its size: historic grand hotels, design and boutique hotels, business hotels near the stations and the World Forum, beach hotels at Scheveningen and a few good hostels. Prices are generally a little lower than in Amsterdam.

The key decision is city or sea. The historic centre puts you within walking distance of the Mauritshuis, the Binnenhof and the best restaurants; Scheveningen gives you the beach on the doorstep, about 20 minutes from the centre by tram. Trams are frequent, so wherever you stay, the rest of the city is close.

Where to stay

Which area suits you?

The Hague is spread out, but the tram network makes every area practical. Choose by how you want to spend your days and evenings.

Historic centre (Centrum)

Best for: first-timers, museum lovers, couples

Around the Binnenhof, Lange Voorhout, Noordeinde and the Plaats. Walk to the Mauritshuis and Escher, plenty of restaurants and bars. The most atmospheric — and often the priciest — base.

Near Den Haag Centraal and HS

Best for: day trips, short stays, budget travellers

Modern hotels and hostels by the two main stations. Very practical for trains to Delft, Leiden, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and Centraal is about ten minutes’ walk from the centre.

Embassy district & Zeeheldenkwartier

Best for: quieter stays, the Peace Palace and museums

The elegant residential districts between the centre and the coast, near the Peace Palace, Panorama Mesdag and the Kunstmuseum. Leafy streets, smaller hotels and good trams.

Scheveningen

Best for: summer beach holidays, families, sea views

The seaside resort with the Kurhaus, the pier and the harbour. Wonderful from May to September; quieter and windier in winter. About 20 minutes by tram from the centre.

Practical notes

  • Parking: city-centre and beach parking is expensive; check whether your hotel has parking and what it costs, or use park-and-ride.
  • Stairs: older buildings can have steep, narrow staircases and no lift — check if that matters to you.
  • Air conditioning: not universal in Dutch hotels; useful during the occasional summer heatwave.
  • Beach hotels in winter: Scheveningen is quieter from November to March, and some restaurants and pavilions close.
  • Car-free stays: stay near a tram line; most of the city, the beach and Delft are then within easy reach.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in The Hague?

The historic centre for most first-time visitors: you can walk to the Mauritshuis, the Binnenhof and the best restaurants. Choose Scheveningen for a summer beach holiday.

Is it better to stay in The Hague or Scheveningen?

For museums and city life, the centre; for the beach, Scheveningen. Trams link the two in about 20 minutes, so either works for a mixed trip.

Is The Hague cheaper than Amsterdam for hotels?

Usually somewhat, especially at weekends when business travel is lower. Prices still rise sharply for big events and summer weekends.

Can I use The Hague as a base for Delft and Rotterdam?

Yes — it is an excellent base. Stay near Den Haag Centraal or HS for the quickest trains.

How far ahead should I book?

For summer weekends, King’s Day and Prinsjesdag, as early as possible. Otherwise a few weeks ahead is usually enough.

Are prices per person or per room?

Hotel prices are per room; hostel dorms are per bed. Tourist tax is added on top. Check the details on Booking.com.
