Kunstmuseum Den Haag

The world’s largest Mondrian collection, in a 1930s landmark by Berlage.

The Kunstmuseum Den Haag — known until 2019 as the Gemeentemuseum — is the city’s great art museum and one of the finest buildings of its kind in the Netherlands. Designed by H.P. Berlage and opened in 1935, its yellow-brick halls, ponds and light-filled galleries are a pleasure in themselves.

The highlight for many visitors is Piet Mondrian. The museum has the largest Mondrian collection in the world, tracing his path from Dutch landscapes to pure abstraction and ending with his last, unfinished work, Victory Boogie Woogie. Around it are works by Monet, Picasso, Kandinsky, Schiele and the Hague School.

There is much more: one of the best collections of Delftware anywhere, period rooms, musical instruments, a large fashion collection and ambitious temporary exhibitions. The Fotomuseum Den Haag and other institutions share the complex.
