A sandy path through green trees and grass in the Meijendel dunes

Meijendel dunes

Wild dunes, woods and lakes just north of Scheveningen.

Meijendel is a large area of dunes, woods, grassland and small lakes between Scheveningen and Wassenaar, on the northern edge of The Hague. It is part of the Hollandse Duinen National Park and is managed by the regional drinking-water company, which purifies water in the dunes — one reason the landscape has stayed so wild.

Walking and cycling paths wind through the dunes to the beach, and the area changes with the seasons: wildflowers in spring, deep green in summer, golden grass in autumn. Grazing animals help to keep the dunes open, and birdwatchers come for the woodland and wetland birds.

It is a superb half-day escape from the city, best by bike, and easy to combine with a swim or a walk on the beach.
